About us: Diverse Capacity Builders is a registered NDIS provider in Geraldton, offering comprehensive disability support and capacity-building services. But, really, we are so much more than that!
Why we joined CRE: We became involved with Community, Respect & Equality because we are passionate about ensuring women and children are supported to live safely in our community.
In my work as a social worker and Director, I am constantly reminded how complex and layered people’s lives can be.
Every day I meet individuals who are navigating disability alongside many other parts of health challenges, trauma, cultural identity, family responsibilities, and systems that are not always easy to understand. Yet within these experiences I continue to witness incredible resilience, courage, and determination.
Working in the disability space has taught me that real support goes beyond services. It is about seeing the whole person, listening deeply, and standing beside people as they advocate for their rights, dignity, and independence.
I also see how important it is that we continue to build communities grounded in respect, inclusion, and equality, where people with disability are not defined by limitations but recognised for their strengths, voices, and contributions.
This is the work that continues to guide us, and the values that continue to shape the journey of our work.
What primary prevention means to me:
Preventing violence against women is directly linked to equality and social justice.
For me, true equality is not only about celebration of women’s leadership, but also about listening deeply to peoples lived experiences, advocating when voices are not heard, and working to shape systems that are fair, inclusive, and responsive to real human needs.
It means recognising that many women face layered challenges of disability, social disadvantage, cultural barriers, trauma, or limited access to opportunity; and ensuring that these realities are not overlooked. Equality asks us to move beyond symbolic gestures and instead commit to meaningful change.
It is about creating environments where women can live safely, participate fully in their communities, access the support they need, and exercise true self-determination over their lives. It means valuing their voices in decision-making, respecting their rights, and recognising their strengths and contributions.
True equality is built when we continue to listen, stand alongside, advocate, and challenge the systems that limit opportunities, so that every woman has the space and support to live with dignity, independence, and hope.
How Diverse Capacity Builders play their part in preventing violence against women: Advocacy is a core part of the support we provide at Diverse Capacity Builders, and being part of Community, Respect & Equality enables us to advocate for those who are vulnerable, and contribute to embedding gender equality and primary prevention.
We have become active members of the CRE Communications Working Group, which has helped shape the way we communicate about these important issues, and inspired new ways to start these conversations with our clients and the wider community. You will often see us at community events, inviting people to reflect on the essential actions needed to prevent violence against women, and what those actions look like in everyday life.
These conversations also happen with our clients. They’re an opportunity to encourage reflection but, just as importantly, to listen. We want to hear their perspectives, value their lived experience, and better understand their hopes and aspirations.
And if you don’t happen to see us at a community event, you’ll almost certainly hear us at the Wheelchair Basketball competition, where we’re proud to be some of our clients’ biggest advocates – or, as they’re more likely to describe us, their loudest cheering squad.
